Overview

Hanmi Gallery is very proud to present Two Not Together, a series of work by Pakistani artist Aisha Abid Hussain. In this exhibition, Hussain builds on themes of gender, class and status and considers a repertoire of culture-specific symbols. Two Not Together explores Hussain's interest in human relationships. The show interrogates our assumptions, our clichés and our romance with the institution of marriage. In each of her pieces, Hussain contrives a staged moment, replete with the finery and the trimmings of attire and dreams. According to Hussain, the staged performance of Bride and Groom is loaded with stereotypical attributes. Her artworks explore the fascinating power politics between two people. In this series of photographs, prints and collages, nostalgia is created with an intended pun inspired by the archive of old family photographs.
