Susan Hefuna : Rasm: of Wood, Silver and Gold

11 Jul-9 Aug 2013

Rose Issa Projects
London W1W 7NW

Overview

This second solo exhibition at Rose Issa Projects, London, features a selection of Hefuna's most recent work, including silver bronze wall sculptures, gold plated brass drawings and wooden mashrabiyas. Rasm means ‘drawing’, ‘outline’ or ‘pattern’ in Arabic. Hefuna plays on the several connotations of this term by taking words and phrases captured from daily life and waving them into the metal. The resistance of each specific material and technique brings ordinary letters and daily communication into a space beyond words. The letters become images and poem-like notations, with several meanings, and open to the viewer’s imagination and phantasies. Also on display a group of new etchings, underlining the artist’s ongoing concern and interest in exploring drawing as a medium. Hefuna was recently awarded the Daniel and Florence Guerlain Contemporary drawing Prize in Paris.
