Overview

Richard Bevan is an artist whose practice is grounded in the medium of 16mm film that was once treasured by the early Expanded Cinema artists but is now becoming increasingly obsolete. As an artist he is interested in the acute material vitality of the medium. His films are inherently site-specific and often record ephemeral moments within the site that the work is subsequently projected. These interventions and constructions manipulate and emphasise the light that is such an integral agent in the filming process. The finished film, which lasts only a few minutes, shooting on an old Bolex wind-up camera, and working with the medium’s practical limitations, is then looped in order to give the details of the scene an opportunity to emerge gently, playing with the audience's sense of the familiar by screening a reinterpretation of the space that the work is projected in.
