Juan Muñoz : Conversation Piece III, 2001
26 Mar 2013-23 Feb 2014

Juan Muñoz (1953 – 2001) is known for his unsettling sculptures of individuals or groups placed in architectural settings. He described himself as a ‘storyteller’ and created sculptures in a ‘narrative’ manner, which broke with tradition. In his Conversation Piece series, bronze figures are arranged in carefully staged groupings, apparently frozen mid-conversation. Like many of Munoz’ figures, those in Conversation Piece III are slightly smaller than life-sized, playing with our sense of scale and perspective and transforming the atmosphere in our Sunley Gallery which overlooks the North Sea.
