ASCO were an artist-collective active in East Los Angeles from 1972 to 1987 – the heartland of LA’s Chicano (or Mexican-American) community. ASCO’s political theatre trades on the low-budget stylistic excesses of 70s glam-rock and Hollywood B-movies. Many of the performances were made to be photographed - looking like stills from a movie that was never made. These No Movies anticipated the postmodern staged photography of Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall and others.
