Marvin Gaye Chetwynd

Overview

Marvin Gaye Chetwynd has described her attitude to making art as “unbridled enthusiasm.” Her carnival-like low-budget performances and sculptural installations made from handmade costumes and props often re-enact towering moments in history, the arts and popular culture. These range from the inventions of Thomas Edison, to the 1997 futuristic film Starship Troopers, Dante’s Inferno and the tradition of illustration in medieval manuscripts. Chetwynd and her collaborators transform lofty cultural achievements and big budget spectacles into deliriously seductive rituals and joyfully improvised happenings. This is the 2012 Turner Prize nominees’ first solo exhibition in a public gallery in Britain it will include both new and recent work, static and performed, emphasising Chetwynd’s attraction to the monster and outsider. In addition to Marvin Gaye Chetwynd’s exhibition in our galleries, we will present a major new performance on Friday 7 February, 'The Green Room'.
