The Response

22 Jun-22 Jul 2012

The Sunday Painter
London SW8 1XA

Overview

The Sunday Painter Gallery invites eight artists to produce work in response to a small piece of discarded cigarette ash that has lain dormant on a small structural outcrop within one of the gallery toilets for roughly over two years. Its continued presence noticed repeatedly throughout this time - and there it still lies awaiting the dizzying homage – an exhibition in response to it, in the gallery above. The ash, a relic and visual landmark of insignificant proportions can become, when dwelled upon in the brief solitude and tranquility of a toilet cubicle, a truly expansive object. From its initial conception when it was absent-mindedly tapped into existence to after it’s inevitable destruction, whenever ever that might be, the ash will leave a small legacy in it’s midst with the spawning of this group exhibition and the 164 words within this press release.
