vivienne koorland : condensation S is for Say It

Overview

For her first solo show at East Central Gallery, the New York-based South African painter Vivienne Koorland embarks on a great challenge. Moving away from her distinctive large-scale canvases, the artist assembles visual index by following a simple rule of alphabetic order, creating what is her most personal and intimate show to-date. Varying in materials and size, the works touch on issues such as love, childhood memories and loss, as well as images and vocabulary that form her unique artistic language. “The Freudian dream term Condensation for my alphabet feels exactly right: In my inventory of symbols and icons of desire the images I represent in pictures and words stand for many thoughts, feelings, wishes and ideas” (Vivienne Koorland).
