Overview

Sculpture has always been about the external surface of an object but in his own words, Hoda’s works ‘turn a natural process inside out.’ Each of this new series of twelve figurative bronze sculptures started life as a small rectangle of nicotine gum that became moulded, formed and re-formed by Hoda’s repetitive chewing. Once the taste and nicotine had been used up, the little pitted and scarred lump was spat out - its form, as he puts it, ‘undecided but completely made by me’. At once becoming and ending within the process of their own making, this series of sculptures builds on a theme of metamorphosis and shift that has been prevalent in Hoda’s previous work.
