KAREN DENSHAM : FORM AND DISFUNCTION

14 Mar-9 May 2015

The Minories Galleries

Overview

Karen Densham approaches the making of art with a broad brush. Her choices of materials and techniques include ceramics, video, drawing, and photography. Much of her work challenges our assumptions and presumptions about the world around us, turning expectations around in a way that can surprise or shock, and encourages us to re-examine our value systems and judgements. The world of works that Karen has created sullies the niceties of the more comfortable and cosy side of life, reminding us that there is a sinister and darker side out there, waiting in the wings. She often takes common cultural elements (chiefly ceramic figurines) and adapts them in subtle ways to alter their character and meaning. These slight adjustments can draw out uncommon relationships and connections within the common-place. Some of the transformations can have a sinister or anarchic edge to them.
