An archival exhibition including film, sound and installation and public screenings presents a portrait of Better Books as the hub of London’s counter-culture during the 1960s accompanied by a series of event based commissions with emerging artists. The paperback bookshop on Charing Cross Road united the scene’s burgeoning tribes in an extraordinary moment of collaboration and interdisciplinarity: sound and concrete poets, improv musicians, CND activists, experimental filmmakers, and artists making happenings, installations and performance. Key figures: Bob Cobbing, Jeff Nuttall, Bruce Lacey, Jeff Keen, Gustav Metzger, Stephen Dwoskin, Alex Trocchi & John Latham.
