Since Sir Benjamin Stone established the National Photographic Record Association in 1897, photographers have been fascinated by the rites and rituals of Britain. This exhibition explores the complimentary relationship between photography and folklore practice. Featuring Faye Claridge, Matthew Cowan, Doc Rowe, Sir Benjamin Stone Collection, Homer Sykes, Brian Shuel, Sara Hannant, Tom Chick, David Ellison, Henry Bourne and Flickr. There are 720 events, rites and customs recorded in the UK each year, and folklore is reflected in every element of our community, life and values. Collective Observations considers the enduring appeal of such traditions as rich subject matter for image makers. We explore how photographers have consistently turned their lenses toward our living cultural heritage. Founded in 2009 by renowned art director, Simon Costin, the Museum of British Folklore aims to promote, celebrate and re-evaluate the folk culture of Britain. The Museum is currently producing a two year exhibition programme in conjunction with regional art organisations across the UK.
