Overview

In his animated videos Charles Richardson explores themes of male identity and the absurdities of contemporary existence. His works comprise 3D scanned imagery of human bodies bound in everyday detritus, combined with fragments of found and self-generated audio. Rendered as hollow digital shells around and through which a camera swoops and pans, the figures appear as both withdrawn objects and emotionally resonant avatars. New technologies for picturing the human form are utilised by Richardson to make unexpected connections between bombastic baroque sculpture, monuments to national heroes, and the contents of a studio waste-paper basket.
