Overview

Sculpture is an object defined by gravity, light and the human body. Landscape is first shaped by geological history and then human history, its limits defined by the horizons of vision. This programme of six films from the early 1970s explores how artists in this fertile period of artmaking used film to collapse landscape into sculpture, a process that redefined and interrupted object-definitions of sculpture to form the ground from which art today grows. Spiral Jetty (1970, Directed by:Robert Smithson, Running time: 35min) Tree (1974, Directed by: Chris Welsby, Running time: 4min) Sun Tunnels (1978, Directed by: Nancy Holt, Running time: 26min) Earthwork (1972, Directed by: Anthony McCall, Running time: 2min) Art of Mirrors (1973, Directed by: Derek Jarman, Running time: 6min) Conical Intersect (1975, Directed by: Gordon Matta Clark, Running time: 10min) Films from the early 1970s exploring sculpture, including works by Derek Jarman, Chris Welsby and Nancy Holt.
