There is no alternative (TINA)

2 Jun-24 Jul 2010

Storey Gallery
Lancaster LA1 1TH

Overview

The 1980s British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, made the notorious neo-liberal statement "There is no alternative". This slogan, shortened by hard right Thatcherites to TINA, suggests that free markets and capitalist globalisation are the only viable economic and political model for a successful modern society. Using film, performance, text, and drawing, the artists Petra Bauer, Pablo Bronstein, Melanie Gilligan, Anja Kirschner and David Panos, Ciprian Mureşan, Unnar Örn, Olivia Plender, Michael Stevenson and Goldin+Senneby challenge this notion. Exhibition conceived by Olivia Plender in association with the Drawing Room. Produced at Storey Gallery by Suzy Jones.
