Overview

This exhibition demonstrates a different response to Simon Liddiment’s exhibition. Tory Lawrence’s paintings incite excitement and intensity to the subject of landscape which is so often tediously, photographically or banally rendered. This quality is realised by Lawrence’s depth and sensitivity to details - the precise lie of the land, a particular drift of a cloud, the strange mystery of a relic of a church. The lavish use of oil paint enlivens the surface and we enjoy the sense of being there: walking the plough, climbing the hillside, crunching the snow, or encountering Framlingham Castle as if for the first time under constantly changing skies. Through a fresh and original vision Lawrence portrays a sense of history as it acts upon the present to combine memory, imagination and true observation.
