Overview

AT: Claire de Rouen Books, 1st Floor, 125 Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0EW ----- Grey Tiger Books’ new illustrated English translation of Jean Genet's L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti is intended as a (part-posthumous) collaborative enterprise between successive generations of highly talented French/English artists/writers. In this new English translation, translator Phil King brings his exhaustive knowledge of the French literary/intellectual tradition, and his precise nose for nuance, to Genet's text. The Directeur Artistique, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, brings a perfectly-pitched sense for where meanings derived from text and image may work into tertiary areas of finesse and appreciation. Jean Genet and Alberto Giacometti became friends in the 1950s. Genet posed for 3 paintings and 4 drawings by Giacometti, and whilst in the studio had leisure to observe the artist at work. This resulting essay is a rare opportunity to observe two of the great creative minds of the last century.
