'A Factory as it Might Be' is an exhibition and ongoing active research project conceived by artist Patrick Staff, which first manifested as a series of performances, talks and screenings organised in collaboration with The Island at the 2012 Whitstable Biennale. The project takes William Morris' eponymous 1884 text on the re-imagining of the factory, and Colin Ward's response in 'The Factory We Never Had' (1994), as points of departure for reflexively examining contemporary sites of production, education and social space - in Whitstable the Biennale and factory, in Bournville the art school and factory – and the intersections between industry and leisure, performance and congregation. A Factory as it Might Be (Bournville) will be International Project Space's last exhibition in its current location and the final exhibition in Andrew Bonacina's programme at the gallery.
