Overview

"In the face of all the challenges our community encounters daily, I embarked on a journey of visual activism to ensure that there is black queer visibility. It is important to mark, map and preserve our mo(ve)ments through visual histories for reference and posterity so that future generations will note that we were here." - Zanele Muholi, 2007 Muholi was born in Durban in 1972. Her first solo exhibition was in Johannesburg in 2004. She has since exhibited at various venues throughout the world. She won the Casa Africa award for Best Female Photographer, and a Fondation Blachère award at Les Rencontres de Bamako Biennial of African Photography in 2009; and this year, she is the Ida Ely Rubin Artist-in-Residence at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
