Sean Branagan, solo show

3 Sep-17 Oct 2010

Gooden Gallery
London E2 9DG

Overview

Sean Branagan continues to stretch the concept of what paintings are, and how we perceive them both as ‘captured moments’ and ‘objects’. Materials such as Perspex and paint are still central, but this time, to present moving image, the projector is replaced by the use of LCD screens. This means that ‘movement’ can be an inherent element of the work rather than externally applied. It also means that ‘light’ can similarly emanate from within, giving the works more independence and allowing them to be seen in the full light of the gallery space (despite being moving image, the paintings are spot lit). This is quite a radical change for Branagan’s moving image paintings, which have previously required the gloom of the room in order to thrive. Or they have relied on the close proximity of the projector (see his LIGHTFORM series and his projector pieces clamped just 70cms away from the canvas)
