In the lead-up to Earth Day, Millicent Hawk presents Life Cycle, a new body of work exploring how ants’ status as superorganisms can help us understand individual and environmental wellbeing through mutualism. Amidst a backdrop of lush fauna, this interactive installation transforms the gallery into a tropical, eco gym. Audiences are invited onto bikes to pedal power their own workout video that journeys through countryside roads, and glimpses into many of the ant worlds’ symbiotic relationships and social behaviours. Themes in the video are supported by sculptural configurations and wallworks – comprising plants, cycling accessories and foraged objects – that combine to illuminate these highly organised, social insect-engineers.
