The Empire Marketing Board poster collection represents one of the more challenging and fascinating areas of the gallery's collections. Created during the 1920s and '30s to promote trade and understanding between Empire countries, the posters present an official view of the British Empire that, from today's perspective, is often uncomfortable. Around 200 of these posters were given to the gallery in 1932 as illustrations of the artists’ role in inter-war design. Yet despite the uniqueness of this collection, they have remained virtually unknown and unused until now.
