Overview

‘courants – contre – courants’ is a book and exhibition project which conveys a vision both apocalyptic and poetic as it interrogates the minutiae of city life. Serge Clément describes the installation as “a ‘film noir’ screenplay to be invented by each reader”. Created of composite narratives with images made in locations as diverse as Montreál, Paris, New York and Berlin, Clément presents a city which is both real and fictional, public and private, open and intimate. For Clément, the city is the land of photographic enigma and ‘courants – contre – courants’ is his attempt to reconcile the visible dynamics of the cityspace with the currents of opinion, feeling and sentiment which run beneath it.
