The Approach is pleased to announce an exhibition of new silkscreens by British artist John Stezaker. Best know for his collage work re-appropriating found film stills, actor’s portraits and postcards, Stezaker has returned to making large-scale monochromatic silkscreen prints, which he was producing alongside the collage works between the 1970s and early 1990s. Also based on film stills, the dramatic scale of this new work relates to projection and enlargement characteristic of the cinematic experience, a main interest of Stezaker’s. Taking inspiration from the imagery of shadows and silhouettes in film noir movies from the 1940s and ‘50s, Stezaker employs the deep black background of the canvasses to suck the viewer into the image space, an experience akin to watching a projected film in a dark cinema.
