Allison Katz was born in Montreal, Canada and lives and works in London. Her paintings and corresponding posters, sculptures and installations reflect a painting sensibility defined by flux, discretion and interrogation. For this, her first solo exhibition with The Approach, Katz muses on the physicality and psychology of scale, a crucial point of communication within painting’s constraints. Structuring the overall installation, as well as embedded within the content of each work, she teases the relationship between micro and macro as a humorous guide to the fate of interconnectedness. Nodding to the ways in which style, myth and language - both oral and written - link timeless imagery to the present moment, Katz spirals down a chain of associations. Her new body of paintings emerge with a selection of positions that are self-contained yet porous, that rotate as much as they refuse, that linger both as recognisable and unfamiliar.
