In 1986, Danny Markey successfully submitted a painting of a shoe shop at dusk to the South Bank Picture Show at the Royal Festival Hall - the first time his work had been shown in public. It won the £2,500 First Prize, beating nearly 900 entrants. A year later, at the South London Art Gallery, Markey's night paintings of fish and chip takeaways were awarded the Christopher Chamberlain Memorial Prize, presented by Sir Jonathan Miller.
