Broomberg & Chanarin : Rudiments

25 Sep-31 Oct 2015

Lisson Gallery, 67 Lisson St
London NW1 5DA

Overview

Debut solo exhibition at Lisson Gallery consists of new photographic, moving image and performative works that collectively explore tensions between discipline and chance, precision and chaos, empathy and the involuntary pleasure of watching the pain of others. The show focuses on a titular film work, Rudiments (2015), in which a group of young obediently marching/drumming army cadets get completely disrupted by a dark ‘bouffon’ clown whose performance teeters on vulgarity and radically challenges martial codes. All of this is propelled by a dramatic, improvised soundtrack by the American musician Kid Millions, and will be accompanied by a special drumming performance that will continue throughout the duration of the exhibition. The artists are also showing two large-scale photographic series, transmitting violence through depictions of military grade prisms and bullets that have collided and fused in mid-air.
