b. 1988, Russia
Dima Rebus (b. 1988) is a contemporary Russian-born artist based in London, working in painting, installation, and sculpture with a focus on material transformation. Known for his large-scale watercolor works, he incorporates custom chemical solutions and rainwater collected from around the world, integrating environmental data into his process. Rebus’s practice is deeply collaborative — people worldwide collect rainwater for him, making them indirect co-authors. This approach explores themes of connection, memory, impermanence, and human behavioral biology. Acting as both collector and archivist, he measures and tests each water sample. His technique involves freezing rainwater with pigments and allowing it to melt, forming organic textures that merge with figurative imagery. The varying pH levels influence pigment dispersion, introducing elements of chance. Starting in street art and illustration, including collaborations with Esquire, GQ, and National Geographic, Rebus transitioned into fine art, continually exploring materiality, perception, and human relationships. His work has been exhibited in Moscow, London, Brussels, and Berlin, and featured at international art fairs like Art Central (Hong Kong) and Art Dubai.
