Cydney Lovett-Downey (b.2000, London, UK) is a multimedia artist living in London, having graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2022. She works with both analogue filmmaking techniques, as well as traditional printmaking methods to generate artworks that utilise the language of poetry, exploring notions of existentialism, human experience and the passing of time.
Collage is a vehicle Lovett-Downey relies heavily upon to develop ideas, and it forms a pivotal component of her realised works. For instance, she splices found Super 8 and 16mm footage to create ‘film collages’, altering narratives of forgotten subjects, while also nodding to the ever prescient debate of analogue vs digital. She borrows from a wealth of cultural resources including literature, cinema and music, re-appropriating cultural artefacts and considering how these change through space and context. For the artist, creating work in this way is a means of making sense of the world, and of seeking out one’s place in it.
