Finnish artist Jukka Virkkunen explores the possibilities of colour and composition in his vibrant abstract paintings. Virkkunen’s direct non-fussy way of mark-making characterises his paintings. He references the local architecture and nature in his paintings to ground his work to the place where it was made.
Jukka Virkkunen currently works and lives between London, Helsinki, and Brazil. Virkkunen received BA in Graphic Design from Norte do Paraná (Brazil) in 2015 and MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (UK) in 2020.
His latest exhibitions include “From the Seven Eggs of Pochard” at Anka Kultys Gallery, London (2021, solo), “UK New Artist Prize” at Saatchi Gallery, London (2021), “Antisocial Isolation”, Saatchi Gallery, London (2020), “Final Not Over: Open Fields” at Unit1 Gallery, London (2020) and “Entrotopia” at Synagóga Centre of Contemporary Art, Trnava, Slovakia.
Jukka has been shortlisted for the UK New Artist of the Year award (2021) and the Hari Art Prize (2022)
