Magda Stawarska

b. 1976, Poland

Magda Stawarska is a multi-disciplinary artist working predominantly with sound, moving image and print. Her work examines the the layering of a city’s unresolved present upon its past and the narratives that unfold within them. Her installations combine moving image, soundscape and, importantly, traditionally made screenprints and paintings on paper; work that draws on her desire to prompt us to remember what we thought, and perhaps hoped, we had forgotten. These projects reveal intimate glimpses of the singular urban soundscapes of places, interrogating their cultural complexities and probing physical and political, public and private borders. Through a retelling of encounters with other artists and writers in her audio collages, StawarskaBeavan explores the process of inner listening.

Stawarska is a subject of Plaited Time Deep Water, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE, a duo show with Lubaina Himid. The artist's participation in recent group shows include : A Fine Toothed Comb, HOME, Manchester, Rewinding Internationalism, Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, Holland and Villa Arson, Nice, France, 'INVISIBLE NARRATIVES; New Conversations about Time and Place', Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzance, UK (2019), 4th International Biennale of Casablanca, Morocco (2018), 'Sounds Like Her', an exhibition which toured in the UK starting at New Art Exchange, Nottingham, then on to York Art Gallery, York, and finally at Gallery Oldham, Oldham (2017-2020).
