Man Yau

b. 1991, Finland

Man Yau (b. 1991) is a sculptor based in Helsinki, Finland. Yau graduated with a Master’s degree from Aalto University of Art and Design, specializing in ceramics and glass art, she received her second MFA from the sculpture programme at the The Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki.

Yau’s artistic practice is a material-led exploration on the topic of exoticization, from both personal and historical perspectives. She works with sculptures and installations, borrowing shapes from recognizable objects and situations, such as Chinoiserie-style aesthetics, porcelain vases and silk ribbons. She uses these to explore exoticization, both within the frameworks of commonly accepted narratives in westernized cultural contexts while simultaneously brushing against these accustomed framings.

Yau's artworks have been featured in numerous international exhibitions, and she received the Raimo Utriainen Foundation sculpture stipend in 2022. Currently Yau is working on her next solo exhibition for the Helsinki Art Museum’s HAM Gallery in 2024. Yau’s work is supported by The Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
