Rudolf Stingel

b. 1956, Italy
Rudolf Stingel (b. 1956, Merano, Italy) lives and works in New York. Over a three-decade career, Stingel has continually explored the medium of painting, embracing abstraction, figuration and photorealism in a myriad of ways. His work involves a self-reflexive exploration of painting as a metaphor for perception and memory, whilst harbouring a dialectic between the painted subject and painting as subject. He is also known for his immersive installations, in which tactile surfaces – expanses of carpet, for example, or sheets of reflective insulation board – offer a way of transforming an entire room into a pictorial plane.
