Charlie Murphy uses properties of glass, light, sculpture, photography, performance and video to create dramatic sculptural installations, performances and events.
Widely known for her popular touring ‘kiss-in’ events, her projects often involve participation and collaboration of some kind.
As a co-director for Wellcome’s Created Out of Mind team, she has been developing interdisciplinary research projects which aim to raise awareness about lesser known impacts of dementias at social, personal and cellular levels. Collaborating with people living with rare forms of these conditions and pioneering scientific research at UCL’s, her projects investigate the powerful metaphors used to describe and articulate these neurodegenerative conditions.
Her work has been widely exhibited across UK and international contexts , including The Royal Festival Hall, Science Gallery Dublin, The Wellcome Collection, (Artist Collectables)Tate Modern, The Big Dance Festival, Edinburgh Fringe (2006), Artsway’s ‘New Forest Pavilion’ at the Venice Biennale .
Her work is presented in many different festival, gallery and public contexts in the UK and internationally, including Royal Festival Hall, London West Yorkshire playhouse, Normal? Festival of the Brain (Folkestone), Creative Reactions/Pint of Science, The Royal Society for Public Health, ARUK, The Science Gallery, Dublin, European Association for Hematology
An experienced arts educator, Charlie is a senior lecturer in Photography at Kingston University and has contributed to programs at Kings College London, The Royal College of Art, University of Gloucestershire, Anglia Ruskin, University College for the Creative Arts. She offers an array of innovative educational and performative workshops , alternative photographic processes, improvised choreography, experimental printing, costume and rosette making.
Charlie studied Documentary Photography at Newport, BA Photography at Farnham and an MA in Photography at the RCA. Her projects have been supported by public and private commissions, ACE ‘s individual artist Grants for the Arts, ArtSway’s Associates Scheme and Artsadmin’s Mid Career Bursary, she is an artist member of the Contemporary Art Society and The Artist Agency.
