SAFAA ERRUAS : HOME INSIDE OUT
Mar 27 - May 17, 2019
Safaa Erruas was born in 1976 in Tetouan, where she lives and works. She graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 1998. Soon after her graduation, Safaa began a series of exhibitions, in and outside Morocco, by virtue of which many curators and collectors have discovered her. Since 1996 she has been exhibiting regularly in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Norway, Algeria, India and United States. She also participated in the Dak’Art Biennial in the 2002 and 2006, and the 25th Alexandria Biennial for Mediterranean countries in 2009, where her work entitled “The Moon Inside of Me” won the award of the Biennial. In 2015 the artist took part at the 12 th Biennal of Habana for the specific project Beyond the wall, more recently and until June 2016 the work entitled “Invisibles” is shown at the Musac museum in Leon, Spain as part of the Lucy’s Iris Exhibition. Erruas works generally on large sizes and designs white themed installation leaving light to underline the spaces.

LISA OPPENHEIM : THE AMERICAN COLONY
Mar 28 - May 5, 2019
In her new exhibition, The American Colony, Oppenheim highlights her unique ability to translate historical subjects and early methods of photo-making through contemporary experimental darkroom processes. In these new works, the artist explores stereoscopy in particular, a technique popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for its pseudo-3D effect in which two images of the same object are taken from slightly different angles and then are optically merged through a viewing device.

Click to enlargeJOHN FINNERAN : SILVER CITY IN A DREAM
Mar 29 - May 4, 2019
'Sometimes I look at an image and remember that I used to worry about death a lot when I was a kid. Not like the process of dying or illness but the impossibility of comprehending not existing anymore. So if I’ve made something like this that is very simple but kind of difficult to understand in any specific way I just assume that’s what I was thinking of. This used to have features, like an eye and a nose and a mouth but I painted them out which made it a kind of mirror which is what this image is to me. Thinking about my inability to comprehend how I won’t exist reminds me of the uncanny feeling of looking in a mirror too long at night.'

Apr 25 - May 18, 2019
Private view Thu Apr 25 6pm - 9pm
arebyte Gallery is pleased to announce World Capital, a new installation by Felicity Hammond.

Conversations about the homogenisation of the built environment have taken many forms. From Walter Benjamin’s writings about the effect of capitalism on nineteenth century Paris, to Ian Nairn’s scathing review of the growing ubiquity of town planning, the crisis surrounding urban identity has been and will continue to be widely contested.

In World Capital the conversation turns towards the way that digital technologies have influenced the global image of the city. Offering a commentary on the role that the computer generated architectural proposition plays in the increasing uniformity of the urban realm, the work outlines the ways in which the proliferation of the virtual world has contributed to urban indifference.

MICHAEL BIRD: THE KITCHEN SINK TOO ARTIST'S VOICES, ARTIST'S LIVES
Apr 25, 2019 6:30pm - 8:30pm talk/event
We often know past artists through the products of their creativity, but what did they sound like, what did they have to say and how does this relate to their artworks? Writer and broadcaster, Michael Bird, will delve into the Artists’ Lives sound archive to present a fascinating variety of voices and life stories from the modern
British art scene. As Goodison Fellow at the British Library, Michael has had unparalleled access to thousands of hours of interviews with artists recorded since 1990.

From the surrealist painter Eileen Agar, to Peter Blake, David Nash, & Phyllida Barlow, we hear from artists whose life stories together create an extraordinarily rich tapestry of 20th-century art in Britain. Copies of Michael Bird’s book Studio Voices: Art and Life in 20th-century Britain will be available to purchase on the night.

Click to enlargeTHE ORIGIN OF LIFE : BY DEAN KENNING
Mar 20 - Apr 28, 2019
Dean Kenning explores political and philosophical material through kinetic sculptures, videos and diagrams, often employing DIY, allegorical and autodidactic methods and modes of representation to engender visceral, uncanny and humorous encounters. For Beaconsfield, Kenning brings the beautiful old creaking floors of the former Lambeth Ragged School into play with an interactive work where random symphonies are triggered by the movement of visitors in an automated parody of creative autonomy and vitalist impulses.
