VANESSA DA SILVA
Dec 7, 2017 - Jan 28, 2018 7:00pm - 9:00pm talk/event
Vanessa da Silva will be presenting new works and performances. Informed by dance and choreography da Silva’s work often manifests itself as performance and sculptural objects. Driven by her personal search for her Brazilian identity, she is drawn to the carnival as a concoction of European and African traditions built from the process of colonisation. Through the movement of the carnival she explores the spaces between the European and the African identity.

Following her time during a residency at Ox-Bow da Silva will present a new body of work that will be based in her exploration of space between nationalities that is neither African or European which are both part of her own heritage. Reworking the graphics of diverse maps, mixing them in new layouts and ‘new territories’.The installation will work in response to the space, creating a ‘stage’ with different heights, some ‘filled’ with work and some missing. This will dictate on how the audience will be able to navigate the gallery.

Vanessa da Silva has shown extensively, recent exhibitions & projects include: Tati, Pandangle House/ Favela Erotica, London, 2007; Fur, curated by Pablo Leon de la Barra, White Cubicle Toilet Gallery, London, 2008; Fine Art WIP Show, Royal College of Art, London, 2016; RCA Secret, Art Dubai, Mina A’ Salam, Dubai, 2016; With Institutions Like This…, curated by Victor Wang and Alex Meurice, Averard Hotel, London, 2016; Notes.app, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; Stuff We Did, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; Carry On, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; 'Seamless Territories', Blyth Gallery, London, 2017; 'Herland', Bosse and Baum Gallery, London, 2017, RCA Graduation Show, 2017, Ox-Bow Artists Residency, 2017.

The series of exhibitions for 2017/18 at StudioRCA Riverlight curated by A- - -Z will explore displacement & otherness – presenting studies of deconstruction of pre-conceived/imperialist knowledge, often through the scope of science fiction, with a selection of solo exhibitions.

StudioRCA at Riverlight is run by the Royal College of Art as a test-bed and exhibition space for collaborating curators and curatorial agencies to engage with public audiences.

Funded by St James, part of the Berkeley Group, the space will support the long-term cultural strategy for the prestigious Riverlight development, animating the public open space, providing the first cultural offer within Nine Elms on the South Bank, and contributing to London's wider cultural offer by drawing in the local community, visitors, residents and workers to the area. The partnership was brokered and developed by cultural consultancy Futurecity. Together we are incubating the best emerging artists from all around the world, right here in Nine Elms. We are enriching the Nine Elms district through art and culture.

Nov 16 - Dec 16, 2017
Spread over the surfaces of Clive Hodgson’s paintings are different coloured oblongs, circles, brush strokes, lines, and other effects that might be stencilled, drawn, scratched, removed, sprayed, splattered, washed, layered. Amongst these forms two others: ‘C.Hodgson’ and the year of production are constant presences. They are not quite like an artists signature but integral parts of the paintings themselves – painted above and below, behind or in front or as negative shapes. In some of the 2017 paintings they are so formally integrated that you don’t even spot them at first. Whilst some of the shapes – lures and hooks to our imaginations – might variously spark associations of targets, punctuation, decorative motifs, snow or eyelashes, the paintings seem to resist those references, or even the very idea of reference. But what of the marks that name and date?

Nov 11 - Dec 9, 2017
'A Song Cycle for the Ruins of a Psychiatric Unit' is Louisa Fairclough’s third exhibition at Danielle Arnaud Gallery. It features a new expanded film installation and audio work, and takes the remains of a psychiatric hospital on the edge of a city as a simulacrum for psychic ruin.

Fairclough worked with composer Richard Glover to devise a series of compositions for voice and tape loop that were performed by singer Samuel Middleton and musician George McKenzie. Each piece was recorded as a ritual for one of the rooms at the former-hospital.

An accompanying essay by Al Cameron will be available as part of the exhibition.

Sep 27 - Nov 25, 2017 FINAL WEEK
The Bureaucracy of Angels is a major new film commission for King's Cross station which records the demolition of 100 migrant boats in Sicily in the winter of 2016. These boats arrived laden with refugees from North Africa and while their human cargo were either sent home or absorbed into the asylum system, the boats themselves were never returned to their owners, laying beached on the concrete forecourt of Porto Pozallo in Sicily.

DAVID MCDIARMID : RAINBOW APHORISMS
From October 25th 2017
Art on the Underground have worked with Studio Voltaire and the Estate of David McDiarmid to present a selection of the artist’s Rainbow Aphorisms series at Brixton Underground station.

David McDiarmid (1952–1995) was an Australian artist, designer and activist, recognised for his prominent and sustained artistic engagement in issues relating to queer identity and history. Rainbow Aphorisms are a series of printed multiples, produced from 1993 until the artist’s death in 1995 of AIDS–related illnesses. McDiarmid produced these works in response to his own, and his community’s, experience of the AIDS crisis, and the multiple forms of devastations it manifests –political, emotional, intellectual and medical.

Click to enlargeJAMES WHITE : BODIES
Nov 22, 2017 - Jan 20, 2018
Blain|Southern presents BODIES, an exhibition of new paintings by James White.

White’s grey scale paintings explore everyday minutiae and hint at something that has happened or may occur. Fleeting moments from intimate, domestic scenes are paused, extended and captured by the artist in meticulous detail.

The references for the paintings are the artist’s own photographs; stripped of their original colour, the painting shifts focus onto subject and technique. Reminiscent of crime scene photography, ‘The paintings are forensic in the manner of their image-capture, the documentary-no-expense-spared monochrome…’1. Tightly cropped, they are suggestive of incidents beyond the frame, alluding to a human presence without depicting any individuals.

SOPHIE JUNG : COME FRESH HELL OR FRESH HIGH WATER
Nov 29, 2017 - Jan 20, 2018
Private view Tue Nov 28 6pm - 8pm
For the second in Blain|Southern’s new series of exhibitions, collectively titled Lodger, its curator Tom Morton has invited the artist Sophie Jung to develop a new sculptural installation, accompanied by a performance that exists as both a live event and a looping video work. For this exhibition, Come Fresh Hell or Fresh High Water, Jung will transform Blain|Southern’s lower gallery into an environment that recalls at once a bunker, an ice cellar, a Brechtian stage set, and a dressing room. Scale, here, is subject to sudden glitches, and the most mundane of objects – coffee mugs, shower curtains, hat stands – hum with histories, ironies, and a simmering sense of fury.

Performances are scheduled at various point throughout the run of the exhibition. Dates will be announced shortly.
