Click to enlargeUNDER THE SPELL OF THE IMAGE : GROUP SHOW CURATED BY JOHN STEZAKER
Jul 4 - Aug 4, 2019
Much contemporary art is guided by the concept. The work selected here is guided by the image. Maurice Blanchot describes the artist as “an exile from life in the world of images”; Kushana Bush, David Kettner and Susan Te Kahurangi King are in different ways such exiles. They accept no responsibility apart from a dedication to, and a fascination for, the image.

HELENE APPEL : OUTSIDE
Jul 4 - Aug 4, 2019
The Annexe is excited to present a new body of works by Helene Appel. Painting on a 1:1 scale, distinctive to the artist’s practice, the show will comprise large life-like tree trunks, rendered in watercolour on heavy linen fabric. The trees are made using a new technique, where the objects are 'cut-out' from the canvas, forming three-dimensional silhouettes. Through the act of cutting-out, Appel is ostensibly destroying painting; the canvas comes to life as an object in itself rather than an image-on-canvas stretched over a wooden frame.

The first major presentation of her work in Europe for more than 50 years, Lee Krasner: Living Colour tells the story of a formidable artist, whose importance has too often been eclipsed by her marriage to Jackson Pollock.

Click to enlargeULRICH ERBEN : PAINTINGS
Jun 21 - Aug 10, 2019
Erben’s vibrant canvases explore the atmospheric possibilities of colour through bold use of pigment and geometric abstraction, recalling the work of Mark Rothko and Josef Albers. His work is based on a contraction of the neighbouring colours, resulting from their harmony or contrast. Erben achieves a special depth in his paintings in which fields of colour serve to expand the qualities of texture and light. Today, Ulrich Erben’s paintings are amongst the most insistent examples of colour focused art. He continues to build upon its sensual diversity and its ability to create both corresponding and contrasting elements.

Click to enlargeJOEL TOMLIN : SPOKE EYE
Jul 10 - Sep 6, 2019
Belmacz is pleased to present Joel Tomlin’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
SPOKE EYE proposes art as a type of technology – something that crafts our becoming. Its forms could be those of ancient tools, odd relics or childhood toys. They sit as monuments to a fantastical weightiness, before all that was solid melted into air: Bonfire’s smoke plumes solidify to be more like cartoon speech bubbles than vapour; Machine Gun sprouts a second pistol head, posing itself as more absurd than fatal. Weaving together the lyrical impulse of folk objects and personal mythologies, the artist works across the mutable borderline between the comical and the sacred.
