43 ARTISTS / 25 YEARS OF CREATIVE INDEPENDENCE / 1 HUGE GALLERY
ongoing - check website for updates
Unfortunately, the gallery is closed in response to the COVID-19 outbreak but we will reopen as soon as we are able to. Sadly we have had to cancel this summer’s August Collectives and postpone 11 exhibitions from the current programme, but we are working with those artists, including Matthew Swift and Howard Rogers, to set new dates.
They will run, we are determined - follow us on social media to find out more.

The exhibition features a rarely displayed body of late work dating from 1981 to 1989, which is being shown together for the first time in the United Kingdom. It includes large scale works on paper in media as varied as graphite, charcoal, crayon, watercolour, gouache and collage, many of which focus on imagery of the bicycle which preoccupied Tanning at this time. The exhibition coincides with the publication of the monograph 'Dorothea Tanning: Transformations' by Victoria Carruthers, which will be released by Lund Humphries in January 2020.

TOYIN OJIH ODUTOLA : A COUNTERVAILING THEORY
Mar 26 - Jul 26, 2020
The first-ever UK exhibition by Nigerian-American artist Toyin Ojih Odutola, this epic cycle of new work will explore an imagined ancient myth, with an immersive soundscape by artist Peter Adjaye.

Toyin Ojih Odutola, recognising the pen as a ‘writing tool first’, plays with the idea that drawing can be a form of storytelling. Working exclusively with drawing materials including pastel and charcoal, she approaches her process of drawing as an investigative practice.

THE BARBICAN IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19
ongoing - check website for updates
To close our building was a poignant moment for us all. We’ll be back as soon as we can and are already looking forward to the moment we can reopen our doors.
All events taking place until Tuesday 30 June 2020 have now been cancelled or postponed. You can sign up to our mailing list to make sure you’re first to know.
Until then, we may have swapped our concrete backdrop for laptop screens on desks, sofas and kitchen tables across London and beyond, but we’re still very much here.
Our focus now is on finding ways we can bring everything you love about the Barbican from our homes to yours, wherever you are.
We’ll be doing this over the coming weeks and months on our digital channels and we would love for you to join us, so do keep checking our website. if you find yourself in need of some inspiration – or distraction – you can always find something to Read, Watch or Listen to here: www.barbican.org.uk/read-watch-listen
We’ll be on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram too if you want to say hello or find out what we’re planning next.

BC Showcase aims to be a curated space for our gallery. Separated from our main website this platform will grow to a catalogue of feature presentations, following a simple format that is flexible enough to combine many forms of media. Often linked to resources elsewhere, in other instances self-contained, we will also collaborate with artists to present editorial contents around specific works or projects they are currently involved with.
We invite you to preview Bartha Contemporary Showcase at bc.show and hope you will accompany us as the site grows. Idiosyncratic and a place for experimentation we hope you will find this an inspiring addition to our program and welcome your feedback and suggestions.
