As a precursor to the British New Wave, Free Cinema marked a broader attitudinal shift in cinema and the arts against the exclusion of whole areas of life. Through a supporting programme of film and events, the exhibition will examine how the movement reflects the present challenges and methods of resistance employed by filmmakers and artists alike. This will include a temporary cinema space built into gallery one.
Gallery two will house an installation presentation of artist Ed Webb-Ingall's new community video project originally commissioned by Studio Voltaire. 'We Have Rather Been Invaded' looks at the impact and legacy of Section 28 and a historic ‘lesbian invasion’ of the BBC six o’clock news on May 23rd 1988. Comprised of archival material and interviews, the video examines the role of activism and our understanding of this piece of legislation 30 years on which prohibited local authorities in England and Wales from promoting homosexuality.
