SPEECH ACTS : REFLECTION-IMAGINATION-REPETITION
to Apr 22, 2019
What stories emerge to frame the visitor’s encounters with the art that they see, and cloak the art that they don’t? How do these stories change over time?

Through the work of more than 40 artists, Speech Acts: Reflection-Imagination- Repetition considers how public museums reflect and shape our collective imagination, and examines how exhibitions can affect these shared narratives.

AND BREATHE...
Mar 16, 2018 - Oct 27, 2019
And Breathe… is an exhibition of artworks from our collection that has been co-curated with mental health groups Start in Manchester, Manchester Mind as well as pupils from Charlestown Community Primary School to explore the relationship between art, positive mental health and wellbeing. The groups and gallery staff worked together last year in a series of mindfulness sessions in the gallery’s art stores and have developed an exhibition designed to encourage people to slow down, connect with art and themselves to enhance their wellbeing.

This, the second phase of the exhibition, mixes the historic with the contemporary, moving from an early 20th century Gwen John interior, to more abstract, surreal and modernist works and contemporary photographic pieces by a diverse range of artists including Yves Tanguy, Paul Nash, Barbara Hepworth and Marcus Coates. The colour scheme, seating, height of art works and interpretation have all been developed to encourage people to spend time in the space and a special audio resource with a range of timed mindful meditations is available.

LEONARDO DA VINCI : A LIFE IN DRAWING
Feb 1 - May 6, 2019
In February 2019 Manchester Art Gallery will take part in Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing, a nationwide exhibition to commemorate the artist’s death. We will exhibit exquisite drawings from the Royal Collection by Leonardo da Vinci concurrently with 11 other UK galleries. Our selection of works focuses on the body and clearly demonstrates Leonardo’s use of drawing to gain an unrivalled understanding of human anatomy. The exhibition includes anatomical studies, caricatures, idealised male and female bodies, drapery, figures in action and studies of an infant and foetus. The selection demonstrates the variety of techniques he used, from pen and ink and watercolour to red and black chalks and metal point, as well as his mastery in depicting ideal and grotesque physical features.

GET TOGETHER AND GET THINGS DONE
May 17 - Sep 29, 2019
Private view Thu May 16
What brings people together, from protest to partying? What is the use of a crowd?
Part of a city-wide programme in 2019 to commemorate the bicentenary of the Peterloo Massacre.

On 16 August 1819, in a period of wide-scale protest and unrest, the area around what is now St Peter's Square, Manchester was the site of a violent assault on 60,000+ peaceful pro-democracy and anti-poverty protesters; now known as the Peterloo Massacre. Historians acknowledge that Peterloo was hugely influential: ordinary people eventually won the right to vote, the Chartist Movement grew into Trade Unions and the Manchester Guardian newspaper was established.

Inspired by these events, we will explore with people the wider theme of the crowd through international historic and contemporary art and group activity, exploring how an exhibition and an art gallery can be shaped by the crowds that use them.
