SHAPESHIFTERS
Jan 12 - Feb 10, 2019
The Approach is delighted to present Shapeshifters, a group exhibition featuring work by Sascha Braunig, Sandra Mujinga, and Maria Pinińska-Bereś. The show will focus on how these artists deal with the ambiguities and slipperiness of subjectivity, identity and visibility within their painting, sculpture, video, and performance work.

HEIDI BUCHER : DIE WÄSSER UND LIBELLENLUST
May 15 - Jun 23, 2019 FINAL WEEK
The Approach is excited to present Die Wässer und Libellenlust, a solo exhibition of works by Heidi Bucher. The show focusses on water and the symbol of the dragonfly, two major aspects of her practice that resonated throughout the late ‘70s and ‘80s. These elements highlighted Heidi’s fascination with the processes of shedding, transformation and renewal. Bucher’s employment of water, with its ablutionary qualities, and the dragonfly, as an embodiment of metamorphosis, represented her vision of breaking free from the constraints and traumas that haunt both one’s past and present.

Jul 4 - Aug 4, 2019
Private view Wed Jul 3 6pm - 9pm
Much contemporary art is guided by the concept. The work selected here is guided by the image. Maurice Blanchot describes the artist as “an exile from life in the world of images”; Kushana Bush, David Kettner and Susan Te Kahurangi King are in different ways such exiles. They accept no responsibility apart from a dedication to, and a fascination for, the image.

HELENE APPEL : OUTSIDE
Jul 4 - Aug 4, 2019
Private view Wed Jul 3 6pm - 9pm
The Annexe is excited to present a new body of works by Helene Appel. Painting on a 1:1 scale, distinctive to the artist’s practice, the show will comprise large life-like tree trunks, rendered in watercolour on heavy linen fabric. The trees are made using a new technique, where the objects are 'cut-out' from the canvas, forming three-dimensional silhouettes. Through the act of cutting-out, Appel is ostensibly destroying painting; the canvas comes to life as an object in itself rather than an image-on-canvas stretched over a wooden frame.
