JOHN KIRBY : ALL PASSION SPENT
Feb 13 - Mar 30, 2019
Celebrated British artist John Kirby is known for his paintings of enigmatic and disquieting narrative scenes, tackling the complexities of identity, gender and sexuality. This solo exhibition brings together new and recent works alongside selected paintings from the past two decades, focusing on the conversation between past and present portrayed by his enduring cast of characters.

Influenced by religious iconography, Kirby stages his figures in strange, or dreamlike settings. His characters depict the struggles and anxieties of childhood and adolescence, adopting ambiguous or coded gestures of play and dressing up, and hinting at charged, psychic dramas below the surface of the everyday.

Apr 4 - May 18, 2019
British artist Tom Hammick uses landscape as an arena for imagined scenes of love and loss. Shaped by diverse references from Northern European Romantic painting to daily news imagery and contemporary cinema, Hammick’s depictions of solitary figures and isolated dwellings conjure mysterious narratives of those living on the edgelands and outskirts of society.

On view at Flowers Gallery will be a solo presentation of new paintings connected to both poetry and music, first developed during a residency at the 71st Aldeburgh Festival. Incorporating themes assembled from literary as well as musical sources, the subject matter of Hammick’s paintings shifts fluidly between the biographical and poetic.

LUCY JONES : LANDSCAPE AND INSCAPE
May 23 - Jul 6, 2019
Flowers Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Lucy Jones, including a portrait of artist Grayson Perry, commissioned by the Attenborough Arts Centre (University of Leicester) which will be displayed for the first time. The exhibition coincides with a new book Awkward Beauty published by Elephant (23 May 2019.)

British artist Lucy Jones is renowned for her raw, wild landscapes and distinctively provocative self-portraits, characterised by expressive brushwork and bold use of vibrant colour. Balancing an intricate rendering of line and space in her landscapes with the powerful simplicity of her portraits, Jones’s paintings conduct a journey through both interior landscapes and the external world beyond.
