KEITH PIPER: JET BLACK FUTURES I A PERFORMATIVE SYMPOSIUM
Oct 21, 2017 5:00pm talk/event
Keith Piper in conversation with Professor Paul Goodwin as part of a performative symposium. This is situated within BGV's current exhibition Jet Black Futures I, featuring Piper's newly commissioned digital work, Mic Drop.

A founding member of the British BLK Art Group (active 1979-1984), Piper is a key British artist and academic figure who has pioneered multi-media installation on a digital platform in the UK from the mid 1980s. More recently, Piper’s research has contributed to the discourses of what has come to be described as ‘Afrofuturism’. Key Afrofuturist concepts of ‘space’, as in the evocation of the ‘astral’, and ‘geography’ as associated with concepts of mapping, distance and terrain, form starting points for the current body of work. The conversation, in progress between Beaconsfield and Piper since 2005, will continue in public through a performative symposium on 21 October that welcomes Professor Paul Goodwin (Chelsea UAL) and Middlesex University Art & Design Research Institute Science Fiction Cluster.

Artist in Residence with Beaconsfield January-March 2018
Jonna Kina’s gallery studio is open to the public on Thursdays 2-5pm and Saturdays 2-5pm and by appointment.

Emerging from Finland into the international arena, JONNA KINA is the first recipient of BELOW ZERO – a new contemporary art prize for emergent Finnish artists launched in 2017.

Stimulated by a relationship between anarchism and the marble industry and a desire to work with sculpture and film, Kina set off to research the quarries of Carrara during the winter of 2017/18. She became fascinated with the structures of this landscape and the techniques of working with stone.
