CHILA KUMARI BURMAN : SELF-PORTRAIT IN SUGAR
Jul 1 - 21, 2017
Chila Kumari Burman played a crucial role in the emancipation of the image of an Asian woman since 1980. Burman, breaks the stereotype of a submissive and motherly figure through subversion of the popular images of womanhood. Found images are often a starting point for her heavily embellished portraits, partly figurative, partly abstract where seductive silhouettes are confronted with bold verbal narrative, prints of the artists’ body and punk slogans. Burman treats her own image as a point of departure for her in-depth analysis of both Eastern and Western imagery. This show will present her historic and contemporary work.

Jul 27 - Sep 16, 2017
Private view Thu Jul 27 6pm - 9pm
Shikeith is an American artist whose photographic portraits depict the psycho-emotional landscape of Black masculinity. In his works, he shows tenderness and vulnerability which is so often omitted from common representation of Black youth. Shikeith in 2014 and again in 2016 was awarded grants from Advancing Black Arts, a partnership of the Pittsburgh Foundation and the Heinz Endowments, which supported the creation of his critically-acclaimed documentary "#Blackmendream," listed by the TribeCa Film Institute as one of 10 films that capture the meaning of Black life in America. His solo show presents most recent photographic work.
