Jun 20 - Jul 19, 2017

Johann Arens uses installation and video to survey the documentary properties of public interiors. By systematically re-editing the hardware of a location he draws up an abstract inventory of the social textures inherent in the site. His work is an enquiry into the role of human interfaces, the desire to touch artefacts and the mechanisms of user behaviour.

VANESSA DA SILVA
Dec 7, 2017 - Jan 28, 2018 7:00pm - 9:00pm talk/event
Vanessa da Silva will be presenting new works and performances. Informed by dance and choreography da Silva’s work often manifests itself as performance and sculptural objects. Driven by her personal search for her Brazilian identity, she is drawn to the carnival as a concoction of European and African traditions built from the process of colonisation. Through the movement of the carnival she explores the spaces between the European and the African identity.

Following her time during a residency at Ox-Bow da Silva will present a new body of work that will be based in her exploration of space between nationalities that is neither African or European which are both part of her own heritage. Reworking the graphics of diverse maps, mixing them in new layouts and ‘new territories’.The installation will work in response to the space, creating a ‘stage’ with different heights, some ‘filled’ with work and some missing. This will dictate on how the audience will be able to navigate the gallery.

Vanessa da Silva has shown extensively, recent exhibitions & projects include: Tati, Pandangle House/ Favela Erotica, London, 2007; Fur, curated by Pablo Leon de la Barra, White Cubicle Toilet Gallery, London, 2008; Fine Art WIP Show, Royal College of Art, London, 2016; RCA Secret, Art Dubai, Mina A’ Salam, Dubai, 2016; With Institutions Like This…, curated by Victor Wang and Alex Meurice, Averard Hotel, London, 2016; Notes.app, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; Stuff We Did, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; Carry On, Dyson Gallery, London, 2016; 'Seamless Territories', Blyth Gallery, London, 2017; 'Herland', Bosse and Baum Gallery, London, 2017, RCA Graduation Show, 2017, Ox-Bow Artists Residency, 2017.

StudioRCA at Riverlight is run by the Royal College of Art as a test-bed and exhibition space for collaborating curators and curatorial agencies to engage with public audiences.

Funded by St James, part of the Berkeley Group, the space will support the long-term cultural strategy for the prestigious Riverlight development, animating the public open space, providing the first cultural offer within Nine Elms on the South Bank, and contributing to London's wider cultural offer by drawing in the local community, visitors, residents and workers to the area. The partnership was brokered and developed by cultural consultancy Futurecity. Together we are incubating the best emerging artists from all around the world, right here in Nine Elms. We are enriching the Nine Elms district through art and culture.
