Rod Barton is excited to announce the solo show “Post-Celestial Compost,” opening September 14, from English painter Tom Howse. The exhibition includes a selection of recent paintings from the artist’s current practice. Painting at a life size ratio, Howse’s compositions subsequently act as unsettled tableaus: wild vistas and twisted mischievous mirrors. There is no feeling of attempting to viscerally assault a viewer, but instead an allusion to a subconscious, fluidic and instinctive process that invites translation onto the canvas. “Post-Celestial Compost” is the first exhibition of the new season for Rod Barton in London.

Lost & Found is a group show featuring the paintings of James Collins and Laurence Owen alongside the ceramic sculptures of Tom Volkaert. As a show, the three practitioners enter a dialogue with each other through a shared visual vocabulary. Collins’ murky paintings act as a reversed stained glass window, where the detail is obscured by a contrived lack of light source. Collins’ application of paint acts almost as an alien-like skin over his canvasses that the sculptural alien forms of Tom Volkaert echo with his ceramic pieces where chair legs become tentacles, symbolic motifs become functional apparatus and glaze becomes skin. Laurence Owen, with his saturated painting surfaces, illuminate the painting of Collins whilst utilising ceramic pins to hold his paintings in place, sharing Volkaert’s visual vocabulary and transplanting it to the canvas.
