Click to enlargeLIGHTING LIGHT WELL : MICHEL VERJUX
Feb 16 - Apr 6, 2019
Laure Genillard is pleased to present a solo show by Paris-based artist Michel Verjux (Chalon-Sur-Saône, 1956). Since 1983 he has used light as the primary medium of his oeuvre, employing theatre spotlights and projectors to construct seemingly physical yet impalpable environments. Through multiple profiles, cuts and fragments, his circular and truncated free forms are not just reflected light, but shadows and halos adapted to a given space and related to a specific moment in time. The ‘éclairages’ are pointed, framed and focused to create interruptions and interactions with different elements, revealing volumes and planes of the surrounding space. The plasticity of Verjux’s habitats, created through the pondered juxtaposition of extremes, is a negotiation of positive and negative, full and vacant, the lighted and the dark.

DEAN HUGHES | SOLO SHOW
Jun 29 - Sep 21, 2019
In the exhibition, Hughes presents new works, as part of a series that began in 2018 made by printing coffee rings from the base (or what is called the foot of coffee cups) onto paper. The artist sees this process as comparable and similar in intent to the process of making potato prints as a child. The process has its origins in a chance crescent residue shape made byplacing a coffee cup on a blank sheet of paper. Hughes is interested in these small occurrences, which can be extended over time through repetition and process - a method of dwelling within the commonplace. The practice of making the prints is a blind process with a degree of uncertainty as to the quality of the mark made. Each new work is an attempt to find an ultimate expression for this way of making a mark – as such each work exhibits a propensity of its own.
